Clarksville IN USA - Tuesday, 15 Jul 1997 at 08:24:03

I served from 89-93 in both Second Div and RAS and was the Fuel Probe Tech (skate job). Loved Nitro and most of the crew, and wish people in civilian life were as great to work with as you were. The wife and I have owned an art gallery for 10+ years now. After hitting my mid-life crisis, I became a firefighter and will be a Police Officer in Dallas come November. A few things to check off my bucket list !! Met with Jim Fowler (was LTJG way back then, now a Navy God) last month when he was in town, and was great to reconnect a bit with the past. Could have talked for hours about the old times. Anyone want to drop me a line to say hi would be great. Be safe.

When I left the Nitro, was stationed on the Cape St. George, when the doctors took me off with nerve damage to my left arm, and then was stationed to NEXCOM Fleet Assist Team. (while aboard NITRO---Lt(jg), CHC, USNR) Command Chaplain, 1990. Followed Chaps. Mike Craig and Jim Scott, and Jim Scott took over again (he was then Squadron chaplain) when I got beached for injuries I received before I got to the ship and was transferred to NNMC Bethesda immediately following the change of command from Capt. Dave Jennings to Capt. Hall (memory is fading here..he was a mustang..pretty good cookie..Had been IC1 before commissioned). I am still in contact with Capt. Jennings (we are both amateur radio operators, as was the 1st Lt., Doug Bowker), and David is retired and teaching school in South Carolina. Although my tenure aboard NITRO was short, I enjoyed serving with our crew and have fond memories of many shipmates. Oh, I arrived the day before the rest of the compliment of women came aboard, and we got underway the day after that to unrep AMERICA when she came back from her Med Cruise that year off Norfolk. That was the time we almost got "run-over" by the ABRAHAM LINCOLN, not yet commissioned but doing sea trials, in Norfolk Harbor. Wow, that was a big ship! Let's see...Bos'n Bear was still aboard, and a whole slug of folks...Oh, a funny thing I almost forgot...I also bumped into HMC Villareal while I was stationed at NH San Diego later after leaving NITRO. What a small world! Chaps Smitha - The Rev. Deanna W. Smitha, M.Div. Chaplain, Major, U. S. Air Force (ret.)

I was onboard from March 91 - Nov 92. I worked in "B" Division. Remember when we came back from the Gulf War? Remember when we went to the yards in "Redhook Projects" in New York. The most unfortunate part of that time in New York was when SN Moore got shot in the head for using a payphone (drug phone). I've kept in touch with a few of the females that were onboard at that time. The friends I made onboard Nitro have been nothing short of a blessing. Would love to hear from anyone that was onboard at that time.

SN, 1991 - 1992, RAS. I have mostly fond memories of life onboard the Nitro, although it seems we spent more time in dry dock than we did underway. After Desert Storm we spent about 12 months at the Brooklyn ship yard and peered in Staten Island before making our way back to Earle Weapons Station. It is great to read the stories from sailors who share the same good memories of such a fine ship. Keep up the good work - Bravo Zulu

Was onboard 1st Div from Dec90-Decom. I was a SN, the best div onboard the "DUKE OF EARLE". I remember the great and bad times onboard the ship. The time were we couldn't even get underway, going down to GITMO, the time that we got towed to VA and the tow ship ran us into the buoy. But we persevered and got the job done. We moved some ammo. Those days on the Nitro set the path for my naval career. I will never forget the Ship. I love what i do every day defend this country and train the future of our navy everyday here at Great Lakes. Drop me an email if you want to contact me. one more thing can't forget BMC Davis, BM1 Brinkley, BM1 Lemasters etc......

GMG3 F. Brown 3rd Division “AKA Franky or Franko”. Served on the Duke from 1986 to 1990. I was the only shipmate from sunny Southern California. My era started on a drizzly day in May of 86. I will never forget that first bus ride from the station entrance to the end of that 2 mile pier where I first met BM1 Fred Balow & GMG2 Fred Allen Hines (Quarters) AKA “F.A.H.Q.” They were on watch at the quarterdeck when I first reported for duty. I was assigned to 3rd Division & at the time, 3rd division was a mix of bos’n mates & gunners’ mates which made for one of the most bizarre & entertaining divisions on the Nitro. I took on photography as a hobby & became the self proclaimed 3rd division photographer. (Thanks Fred). I have a lot of great shots of our division brothers at pretty much all of our exotic destinations. (And bar scenes).Walker, McKenna, Stark, Rabb, Bushner, Berman, Balow, Hinds, Fred Flintstone, Fester, Armstrong, Boyd, Chewy, Gardner, Barney Rubble Robles & a store keeper we called “Scoop”. You are all there and others in the undocumented (& uncut) version of 3rd Division Gunners Gone wilde (yes our gunners & chiefs are there too) As you all may remember, I took on a part time job delivering Deli sandwiches to the Nitro, Surabachi & Butte while in port from Slaters Deli. I kind of took that business to heart. Honorably discharging out of Long Beach California, I opened my own Restaurant, Catering & Deli Business from the mid 1990’s to 2006. My wife & I then moved to Flagstaff Arizona & relocated our business to the High country & never looked back. Until know. This site really brought back some of the memories & times that shaped who I am today. For that I wish to thank each & every one of my brothers stationed onboard the USS Nitro. I Hope to hear from you all someday.

Hello all, I was in the S-3 Division I worked in the office with the SK's and ran the S-3 division from 1993 until I got hurt in 1994. I spent 2 years in Washington waiting on a medical discharge but had to undergo some surgery first. I just heard about this page the other day when I happened upon another fellow USS Nitro Hat wearer. He told me about this web site. He told me the next reunion was going to be in Earle New Jersey this June. I am planning on trying to make it pending problems with life. I moved to Florida about 7 years ago. I miss the Navy, I talk about my time aboard the Nitro all the time because of all the ships I was on this one was my best one. I enjoyed the crew and had some great times. You guys and gals were the best to work with. I hope to see you all at the reunion in June.

E3/First Division- Rocky Maes - I served aboard 1990-1992, I arrived to the ship when it first returned from the Golf to listen to all the stories from the adventure. While onboard we were in the shipyard most of the time, not much time at sea, yet it was a great crew to have been part of, was always interesting. Would like to hear from those who served at the time.

I served onboard USS Nitro AE-23 in 1st Division from February 1989 to July 1991, She was my first duty station and my introduction to the Navy I have come to appreciate everyday. I worked for Great Leaders; BM2 Charles Roswell "ROZ", BM1 Virgil Bufford "Choppers", BM1 Normand Brinkley and served with many other fantastic Shipmates, BM2 Trevor Whaley, John Fuller "FULLER J", Mauro E. Guevara........ I reported as a boot E-1, left a harden BM2 with a fantastic foundation as a Sailor. GITMO, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Mine Lookout through the Suez Canal, Shellback, Brooklyn Naval Shipyards, the "longest Pier Ever" and all the Ports in between. I'm currently still serving in the Navy as and LDO EOD Officer, coming up on 25 years of service and still enjoying what I do and what the Navy and the USS Nitro made me. To all my past shipmates I wish you all great success and I hope your memories of the "Duke of Earle" are as fond as mine. There were difficult times but the good ones far out weighed them, If any of you wish to contact me you can find me on Facebook or just use my email. LT Troy R. Lawson, USN, LDO; Readiness and Training Officer (N7), Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit EIGHT "THUNDERSTEALERS", Saving Lives and Righting Wrongs.

91 - 95 OS1 - OSC(SW). OI Division LPO and Division Officer. This was a bad time for the old lady. When I joined the crew, she was in drydock in Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY. Anyone who was there knows how miserable it was. We even had a young Seaman get shot in a driveby. Then we were towed to SIMA Staten Island, had major mechanical issues over the next year. Missed deployments. Went DIW in the VaCapes and had to be towed into port. They towed us over a buoy which got caught in our screws...But we finally did get things turned around and made 4 (I believe) trips across the pond to Rota, Spain and Helensburgh, Scotland bringing bullets back home from a closing NATO Weps Station and a NATO mini Med. I was selected from some stiff competition for Sailor of the Year in 1992 which helped me make Chief in 1994. All in all, a very good time...

Served on the Nitro from 1991-1995. Great Chief's Mess I remember a lot of folks from back then. I started as 1st Division LCPO working with BM1 Brinkley and had great guys in division like Gueverra, Soto and John Fuller. I remember BMCS Lucca, BMC Niemec who I was relief for. When CDR More came onboard he transferred me to RAS Division where I served with EN1 Hughes BM2 Bobby Nelson, MM1/MMC Michael Dunkin. HTCM Lang was CMC the CTMC Matthews took over. Members of the CPO mess included BTC Crupper, MMC Russ Degroat, PNC Dorothy Thomas, PNC Sandy Southall and GMGC Taylor. I had a awesome Divison officer in Lt Davis and our Bosun was Bosn Adams. Others I remember are DC2 Committee, DC3 Minard and ET2 Gipson. I remember a lot of other but time may run out. Some of my fondest memory were falling down the brow during a storm in Norfolk when the the brow fell off the ship and the other was being the only CPO promoted to Senior Chief prior to decommissioning. I was as shocked as everyone else. My best times in the Navy were when I was on the Nitro. I think a lot about her and all my shipmates. I retired from the Navy in 1999 after 22 years I currently work as a Department Supervisor for The Home Depot here in Bowling Green. I would love to hear from any old crewmates.
